Prior to 1967, there were two fire districts not related to the Boise Fire Department. The Cole Fire District had a station located at Fairview and Ordchard Street. The Collister Fire District had a station located on Hill Road. In 1967, the two districts merged, forming the Cole-Collister Fire District. A station was built at 5800 Glenwood Drive, which is the location of the current Station 16.
In 1994, Cole-Collister Fire District became the North Ada County Fire and Rescue District.
In December, 2009, Boise Fire Department and North Ada County Fire and Rescue District signed a joint operations agreement, renumbering the station to 16. Engine 201 became Engine 16. At the same time, the second station for North Ada County Fire and Rescue, located on West Chinden Boulevard, was de-staffed and is currently not in operation.
