The History of the ARFF Station
Prior to 1965, the United States Air Force maintained the fire protection for Gowen Field. In 1965, under the direction of Fire Chief Steve Taylor, the Boise Fire Department took over the fire protection at the field. A new 3-bay station was built near the air terminal and a crash truck ordered.
In 1999, the National Guard took over the fire protection of Gowen Field in a much disputed move. For a time, there was talk of moving Station 7, which was also housed with the ARFF units, off of the airport property. Boise City sued, stating that the fire protection was part of Boise Fire Department. In 2001, the suit went to court, where Boise Fire Department was given control of fire protection at Gowen Field once again.
Today, the ARFF units pictured below and some other units stationed at the other side of the air terminal remain as the ARFF Station. Station 7 was relocated within walking distance of the airport, though, in a new facility in 2003.
